Secure Tenancy
If you became a tenant before 15 January 1989, then you are a Secure Tenant. As a Secure Tenant, you may have the
Right to Buy your home.
Assured Tenancy
If you became a tenant on or after 15 January 1989, then you have an Assured Tenancy. If you are an Assured Tenant you may have the right to buy your home, but in this case it is known as
Right to Acquire.
In order to take advantage of the Right to Acquire, you must have a permanent Assured Tenancy. There are also other rules around how your property was funded.
